Warren Buffett Wanted to Buy the Redskins

Warren Buffett is a rich guy. There’s no doubt about it. As a matter of fact, he’s so rich that he and Dan Gilbert, Cleveland Cavaliers owner, are teaming up to offer $1 billion to anyone who can nail a 100% perfect bracket during March madness.

It surprising to find out that Buffett has always wanted to own an NFL team. As a matter of fact, he’s always wanted to own the Washington Redskins but he never went through with the purchase. On the Dan Patrick show, Buffett mentioned that he was once a water boy for the Redskins and always dreamed about buying the team.

“You know, when I was a kid, I thought if I ever made a lot of money, I would go out and buy a team,” said Buffett. “I was a water boy with the Washington Redskins for two games – I lived in Washington at the time – and I thought if I ever had a lot of money I’d buy the Washington Redskins.”

There’s no question that the Redskins are a proud franchise. But let’s face it. They haven’t won all that much since Dan Snyder bought the team once Jack Kent Cooke died. It surprising that people have not demanded Buffett buy the team outright!

Patrick also mentioned to Buffett that fans would love it if he were to purchase the team. Buffett even joked about becoming a sports star and they discussed whether or not Snyder would sell the team. He probably would not.

“I think Dan Snyder… I don’t know whether he would sell,” said Buffett. “Sammy Baugh was my hero in those days. That’s a little before your time. It was the dream of every kid to have a sports team; well, it was the dream of every kid to be a sports star. But of course I never had a chance of that.”

Many people also dreamed about becoming a billionaire. Buffett was lucky enough to check that one off of his bucket list. Achieving the billionaire goal makes it much easier to achieve other goals as well, so we’re surprised that Buffett is not pursuing purchasing an NFL team with much more gusto. Keep dreaming Redskin fans.
