Warren Buffett, Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire Hathaway, has only one diploma on his walls at Berkshire Hathaway, and it is not his college degree or his graduate degree. He has his certificate of completion of Dale Carnegie course that is hanging in his office.
You would not know it today, but as the young man, Warren Buffett was terrified at the thought of public speaking. So terrified, that he would become physically ill and vomit at the thought of having to speak publically.
Warren Buffett knew he had to resolve his fear of public speaking so in his younger years he signed up for the Dale Carnegie public speaking course. To this day, Warren said taking the course totally changed his life.
About midway through the course, Warren got proposed to Susan Thompson. Warren says the confidence he developed even halfway through the course gave him the confidence he lacked before starting the course. Also, Warren got confident enough to start selling stocks in Omaha.
In taking the Dale Carnegie course, Warren Buffett realized he is an active learner. Through the course, Warren learns to talk about something that he had knowledge of. Warren learns how to add experiences from his life and career to make a point.
Warren was also taught in the course to take notes. He learned the practice of taking notes of what he wanted to speak about through his everyday life’s experiences. These notes are what you use when you are speaking publicly, not a prepared written speech.
If you take stock in Warren Buffett when he speaks, he is excited. His words convey positive emotions, and gives off postive energy to his audience. Even today, at 84, Warren’s energy, enthusiam, and postive energy is still going strong because he took what he learned from Dale Carnegie and continues to use it everyday.
