Donations to charities, in the amounts of millions of dollars, have just reached their highest levels since the year 2008. Last year, nearly $17 billion dollars were given out, and some of the biggest donors include Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. In 2013, the value of million dollar donations rose by a total of $3 billion dollars when compared with the year prior. But, during the same period, the number of donors saw a significant drop off during this time, we learn from a new report offered by Coutts, a private bank.
In 2013, there were a total of 1,173 donations for a million dollars or more. This is down from donations in 2012, which saw 1,408 of them. But in total, the gifts given in 2013 totaled $16.92 billion dollars, and this is an increase from the prior year that only has $13.96 billion dollars in charitable donations, according to the Million Pound Donors Report offered by the bank.
Three large donors led the field. The biggest new gift was given by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They gave the World Health Organization a total of $1.8 billion dollars last year. Warren Buffett delivered $2 billion to the Gates Foundation, as part of an annual contribution to the foundation that is part of a pledge Buffett made to donate $30 billion dollars back in 2006. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation received a $1 billion dollar donation from Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, his significant other.
