JAY Z WARREN BUFFETT: The first Forbes 400, undeniably, was inspiring. One of the most successful recording artists of all time, Jay-Z, flew in to meet up with the world’s most successful investor, Warren Buffett, on his home turf in Omaha, NE on a warm September morning. The purpose of the visit was to capture their very different outlooks on success and wealth and to discuss social obligations that come with each. They ended up finding out they had more in common then anyone would expect.
The main event was an hourlong videotaped discussion at Buffett’s office building. Coming from two different worlds, Warren Buffett and Jay-Z both reached levels of success that are impressive. Warren Buffett started early as a child. The way he explains it, he considers himself lucky, his dad was in the investment business. At age 7, Buffett was reading books about investing. He knew what he wanted to do at a young age. Jay-Z, was a little different, he came out with his first album at the age of 26.
Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z grew up in the projects in Brooklyn, New York. He said not a lot of people make it out of the projects. Most end up dead or locked up for a long time. Jay-Z was one of the lucky one’s that made it. Jay-Z expresses how he had been around music his whole life, and he had a passion for writing. As Jay-Z was getting into the music industry he realized that you couldn’t mix the love of making music with money, you had to actually separate the two in order to take it more serious.
Warren Buffett says there’s a lot of luck in it. Jay-Z said he does the recording for himself and the money comes after. It just comes down to the fact that your more successful when your doing something you love to do. It’s almost like it’s not even a job. Both Warren Buffett and Jay-Z got to do what they love, and it doesn’t get any luckier then that. Warren Buffett explains that his rejection from Harvard, is what allowed him to go study under Ben Graham at Columbia which had changed his life. All kinds of things had worked out for Buffett. Jay-Z growing up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn were not too many make it out, made a great escape by having a passion for music. Other then that he might not have made it.
At the end of their interview, Jay-Z and Warren Buffett basically expalin how their successes in life are definitely a blessing and a lot of luck. They hope to continue to influence the world.
