Warren Buffett, philanthropist and CEO/ chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, celebrates his 88th birthday on August 30, 2018. Known as a legendary investor, he has notably provided financial assistance to visionaries both domestically and internationally. Since 2010, Buffett has worked hand in hand with Bill Gates, forming The Giving Pledge to rally other wealthy individuals for philanthropic causes.
The Giving Pledge represents an effort from multiple billionaires to tackle some of the nation’s – and world’s – most pressing issues. Since 2010, Buffett has given more than $46 billion to charitable causes, ranging from funding organization that build schoosl in remote villages across Honduras to increasing voter turnout throughout the United States.
To date, Buffett has attracted over 175 individuals to significantly fund different philanthropic efforts, representing 22 different countries from across the world: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Monaco, Norway, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Africa, Tanzania, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
These individuals have pledged to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues while openly discussing how we can be smarter about giving.
Buffett once stated, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone else planted a tree long ago,” a quote that truly guides his philanthropy and provides insights on how to live a generous yet successful life. It is not a coincidence that Buffett continues to give to efforts that can take years – or even decades – to make a difference in the human condition.
So for Buffett’s 88th birthday, let’s celebrate all that he has given to help improve the human condition. Just perhaps, he planted that tree for you too.
