As you can imagine, it’s extremely difficult for a man or woman to make it onto the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans.
This year’s minimum net worth to make the list was $1.55 billion, and because of this, 113 billionaires in the United States were left off of it. Since Forbes started tracking wealth in the United States in 1982, this was the highest cost of entry onto the list.
Bill Gates, former chairman of Microsoft, is at the top of the list for the 21st year in a row with $81 billion.
Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway CEO coming in at second place, which he has done since 2001, has more than $67 billion in his accumulated fortune.
Oracle founder Larry Ellison came in at number three at $50 billion, and he was immediately followed by the Koch brothers, David and Charles, who are both worth $42 billion each.
Christy Walton, the richest woman in the world, has a connection to Walmart even though she’s the co chair of the Children’s Scholarship Fund. She married into the Walton family – that founded the big-box retailer – and inherited a large fortune from her former husband when he passed away in a plane wreck.
Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City, made the list again as expected. He is worth $35 billion. As a perennial businessman, it’s not surprising that Bloomberg returned to his company less than a year after being New York City’s mayor.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, saw his net worth skyrocket this year to $34 billion. It’s up over $15 billion since last year, and he is the biggest dollar gainer on the list at this time. He fell one spot shy of reaching the top 10.
Elizabeth Holmes, business person and Stanford University dropout, is one of the most interesting newcomers to make this list. She founded Theranos, the blood testing company, which is now worth in estimation of $9 billion. She is the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world.
