CORT Business Services was first founded in 1972 by Mohasco Corporation, a furniture manufacturer in New York. When it was established, it was called CORT Furniture Rental and was the result of the merging of five regional furniture companies.
Originally, the company focused on providing furniture for students, apartment communities, and military families. However, it quickly expanded to offering business furnishings in 1976 and then kitchen, bed, and bath options in 1988. At this point, the company could provide furnishings for an entire house, and CORT split from its parent company Mohasco Corporation.
In 1995, the company changed its name to CORT Business Services Corporation, and only five years later, in 2000, it was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway. With Berkshire’s backing, the company continued to grow, offering business globally in 2001 and launching additional services including apartment finding and relocating in 2005 and 2007.
By 2017, the company had more than 100 offices with operations in the United States and United Kingdom and partners in more than 80 other countries. It continues to provide excellent customer service and unmatched desire to provide furnishing solutions other companies cannot.
