Brief History

The GUARD companies, which included AmGUARD Enterprises, AmGUARD Insurance Company, and InterGUARD, Ltd., were originally formed in 1982. The GUARD companies were renamed The GUARD Network in the mid 80s, and were dedicated to providing commercial insurance policies for small business owners.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, The GUARD Network acquired a two other insurance companies including NorGUARD in 1987, and Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Saco, Maine (which was renamed EastGUARD) in 1995. The fourth insurance company, WestGUARD, was formed in February 2003. The new millennium also brought about the name change to GUARD Insurance Group, which was managed by a holding company, GUARD Financial Group.

In 2007, GUARD was purchased by Clal Insurance Enterprises, who sold the company to National Indemnity Company (a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary) five years later. The companies were then branded as Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies after the 2012 purchase.

After the purchase by Berkshire Hathaway’s subsidiary, the corporate structure of GUARD was reorganized for simplicity. Since then, the company continues to be known as one of the top corporate insurance companies in the country and has written thousands of insurance policies.
