Acme Brick Company

Manufacturer and distributor of one of the oldest building materials in the world, Acme Brick is an American company that is dedicated to creating the best bricks for any variety of commercial and private uses. It became known as one of the largest American-owned brick manufacturers by the mid 20th century and was the first company to offer its customers a 100-year limited guarantee on its bricks.

Originally chartered in 1891, Acme Brick is one of the oldest surviving brick manufacturers in the country. It has numerous subsidiary companies operating under it as well, including Jenkins Brick, Texas Quarries, IBP, American Tile and Stone, and Featherlite Building Corporation. Acme Brick and its subsidiaries were purchased by Berkshire Hathaway in 2001.

In addition to bricks, Acme Brick and its companies also distribute other things including ceramic tiles, setting materials, grout, hardwood and laminate floors, carpet and area rugs, concrete segmental retaining walls, outdoor kitchen equipment, fireplaces, and more.

Brief History

Acme Brick Company was originally chartered under the name Acme Pressed Brick Company in 1891 in Parker County, TX. The first plant was located fifteen miles to the southwest of Weatherford and the company town that grew there was named Bennett, after the owner of Acme Pressed Brick.

Over the years, the company saw numerous ups and downs including a strike in 1908 that briefly shut down operations, a name change in 1916, and a tumbling of brick sales during the Great Depression followed by a surge in sales postwar.

From 1968 to the mid 1970s, the company began branching out and purchasing additional subsidiary companies including Justin Boot Company and Featherlite. When the housing market hit an all-time low in 1981, the company continued operations, stockpiling inventory. The 400 million bricks created during the housing slump led to record sales in 1983 and 1984. As sales continued to climb, Acme Brick began stamping its bricks with its logo, perpetuating the brand recognition which continues to this day.

In 2000, the Justin Industries Board of Directors, owners of Acme Brick Company, approved the sale of the company to Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway. Acme Brick sold for around $600 million and, to this day, is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
