Billionaire Warren Buffett, also called the Oracle of Omaha, is renowned for his investing genius, his folksy wisdom, and his management of the multi-billion dollar conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway. As one of the richest men in the world (at the time of writing, he was ranked second under Bill Gates and had a net worth of around $70 billion) Buffett could buy basically anything that he could want. But, anyone who knows anything about Buffett knows that’s not his style.
Instead, Buffett and Gates together created the Giving Pledge, in which they both committed to giving away most of their wealth. The pledge, which you can read about here, doesn’t specify how participants give their money away, but philanthropist Buffett has spread his money across several different charities. Here are a few of them:
- Animal Rescue Foundation
- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
- Girls Inc.
- Howard G. Buffett Foundation
- James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness
- Make-A-Wish Foundation
- Music Rising
- NoVo Foundation
- Sherwood Foundation
- Smile Train
- Sunshine Lady Foundation
- Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation
Philanthropy runs deeply in the Buffetts, and some of the above charities are actually ran by Buffett’s three children or, in the case of the last one, were created in honor of relatives. All in all, Warren Buffett has given away an estimated $28 billion so far to various charities and causes.
“If you’re in the luckiest 1 percent of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 percent.” – Warren Buffett
Interestingly, most of Warren Buffett’s charity donations are actually in the form of Berkshire Hathaway stocks as that’s where most of his net worth is located. However, the cool thing about that is that as Berkshire’s profits and standing continue to go up, so does the value of his donation. It’s almost like investing in a charity. Buffett might be an excellent businessman, but he is also an incredible philanthropist as well.
